UNNAMED NEWBORN MANNON
This baby was the newborn infant of Elizabeth Caroline (Leech) and Samuel Rice Mannon. His untimely birth came from the unfortunate tragedy of his mother being bit by a rattle snake while still carrying him (or her, uncertain of baby's sex).

His parents were married on April 22, 1849 in Mercer County, IL. In 1854, they moved their family to Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa. It was here that baby and his mother died. His mother lost her battle to survive on Sept 10, 1856. She had been out gathering eggs just four days before, when she reached into a nest above her head to feel around, not knowing a rattle snake was coiled up inside the nest. She suffered terrible for the next four days and during her suffering she gave birth to the couples third child, but the snakes venom had been powerful enough that both baby and mother both lost their lives.

They left behind a grieving father who already had tragically lost two wives and and an infant daughter. The baby also had three older siblings, Sarah Ellen Mannon by his fathers first marriage. (She had been raised by her grandparents, Aaron Mannon and his second wife Miriam, after the death of her mother when she was only four months old). Also left behind were his 6 year old sister Rebecca Jane & 3 year old brother James Monroe by his parents marriage.

The records do not say exactly when the baby was born or when he died, only that baby and mother were buried together in the same grave in the Shawneetown Cemetery.
