LaVerne Hughes Price Campbell, of Dorchester, SC, entered into eternal rest August 4, 2012, in Mt. Pleasant.

LaVerne was born in Cordova, SC on December 16, 1922, daughter of the late Fuller Horace and Janie D. Baldwin Hughes.

She lived in Charleston with her sister while attending school but returned to Ridgeville with her family and graduated from Ridgeville High School in 1939, and later received an Associate Degree from Trident Technical College.

In 1948, she married John H. Price of North Carolina and the two of them moved to Dorchester, SC and ran a family store. John later went to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and LaVerne went to work for the US Postal Service in Dorchester in 1951. She retired as the Postmaster in 1984.

She was an entrepreneur involved in many businesses including L&M Catering and Country Potpourri craft store. She was a charter member of the Ivy Garden Club and continued to be an avid gardener and pursued her hobby by running a nursery from her home in Dorchester.

In later years, she saw many of her loved ones leave before her including her husband John who died in 1998. Shortly thereafter, she lost her daughter Doris "Dottie" Hartzog to an automobile accident. At 77, LaVerne married her "high school sweetheart" A. Garlin Campbell of Givhans, SC. The two of them lived in Givhans until his death in 2009.

During retirement, LaVerne loved to travel and play cards. She organized the Dorchester Monday Night Couples Bridge Club. Most of all, she loved God and her family. She had long since told her family that she had all she needed and would give the rest away. Her words were as golden as her years. She regularly gave financial assistance to folks in the community without seeking recognition. Although a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Dorchester, she most recently attended church regularly at Cypress United Methodist Church in Ridgeville where she was an active member of the Ladies Missionary Society.

She will certainly be missed by her community and surviving two daughters, Pamela Price, and Susanne Hilton; son-in-law Douglas Hartzog; five grandchildren: Holly Hartzog, Shawn (Betty) Price, John (Jessica) Peavy, Russell (Elizabeth) Hilton, and Timothy Hilton; seven great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; her close friend Ernestine "Ernie" Owens and many other friends and family members.

She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters: Cornelius Hughes, Marcus Baldwin, Louie Polk, Myrtle Thrower, Ella Jo Davis, and Rosie Bozart.

Funeral services will be held at Salem United Methodist Church, August 8, 2012, at 11 am with the Reverend Ronald Brewer officiating. She will be interred next to her first husband John H. Price in Dorchester Cemetery.
