At the age of 17, he enlisted in the 4th New York Heavy Artillery. His company was sent to the front a once and took part in many of the most prominent battles of the war. At the Battle of the Wilderness, he was wounded in the thigh in 1864. He recovered and served until the Confederate army surrendered. He was in Battery F. He is referred to as Corporal Polk Adams.
