MRS. JENNIE BOWLES FOUND DEAD IN BED
Mrs. Jennie Bowles, 70, was found dead in bed at her home in Emerson last Thursday morning, Aug. 5. Mrs. Dorothy Deverger went to the home of Mrs. Bowles that morning but received no response when she tried to call her and the screen doors of the home were latched. Gratz Bowles came along within a few minutes and after forcing one of the screen doors open, the two entered the house. Coroner Wm. Smith of Hannibal was notified, but did not order an inquest after talking with relatives and neighbors.
Mrs. Bowles had been under the care of a physician, but able to do her housework. She had gathered and canned string beans the day before.
A native of Louisville, Ky., she was born April 23, 1873 (sic), the daughter of Warren and Jennie Moore, coming to this county with her parents when quite young and spent the remainder of her life in Emerson community. Her husband, the late Edgar Bowles, to whom she was married Oct. 20, 1890, preceded her in death almost to the day, Aug. 4, 1918, twenty-five ago. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Beulah Patterson of Quncy, and one grandson, Edwin Bowles Patterson. She also leaves fifteen nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at Emerson Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. R. N. Wilkinson of LaGrange, interment being made in the church cemetery.
The funeral hymns were sung by Mrs. Lura Hickman and Miss Elma Bowles. Honorary pall bearers were neighbors, including O. D. Hutcherson, W. A Brunk, T. B. Marksbury, Hartley Marksbury, G. B. Bowks and Gabe Marksbury. Active pallbearers were nephews, Clarence Welch and Harvey, Ruby, Robert, George and Joe Moore.
Mrs. Bowles had been a member of the Emerson church since early in life. She was held in love and esteem by all who knew her.
The body was prepared for burial at Lewis Bros. funeral home.
