Lester was a veteran of WWI enlisting 26 Jul 1918. 156 Depot Brigade to 20 Sept 1918; Battery F 117 Field Artillery to Discharge Private American Expeditionary Forces 14 Oct 1918 to 20 Dec 1918. Honorable discharge 18 Jan 1919. 5% disabled.
It has been observed that there was no such unit as the 117th Field Artillery, likely the unit designation an error in the titled Soldiers of Ohio in World War I record in error. Lester was however, gassed during the "Hundred Days Offensive" from which he never fully recovered even while only awarded a 5% disability.
Lester married Ruth Myrtle Drew very shortly after discharge, but even with three children born to the couple the union ended fairly quickly. Only the oldest son, Victor, stayed with the mother, Ruth, while the youngest son, Reginald, was adopted by his Uncle Roscoe j Drew and his wife, Mary Jane [Moore] Drew. What became of the daughter, Sarah A Cook, born 21 MAR 1922 • Seneca County, Ohio isn't known to this cousin.
