Franz was born in the Sudetenland of the former Kingdom of Bohemia (now Czech Republic), which then was a part of the Austrian Empire.

The details of his early life remain unknown. He appears to have immigrated to the U.S. in his 30s, and he quite likely came to Dunn County where several of his sisters resided in the town of Menomonie.

Some time before 1905 he took up residence with his widowed sister Katherina on the farm first cleared by her husband in the town of Menomonie and later taken over by their son John Knopps. Franz lived with his nephew John until his death in 1927.
