At the time of Adam's immigration, Weinheim was part of Prussia. Adam nor his parents wanted Adam to be drafted into the Kaiser's army. So Adam's parents bribed someone to sneak him out of the country. Adam was packed into a steamer trunk & loaded onto a ship headed for the USA.

When they were safely at sea, the person they bribed let Adam out of trunk. Thankfully, his parents had also given Adam enough money to pay his fare & I assume the bribe for releasing him.

Every day for the remainder of his life, he feared someone would find him & take him back to Prussia. The last time he saw or had any contact with his family was the day he was packed into that trunk.

In Pittsburgh he owned a pretzel bakery & made a comfortable living for his family including the years of the great depression.

While standing on a corner, less than 50 feet from his home & bakery, a streetcar jumped the curb and instantly killed him. The street car never stopped. My dad said the streetcar drivers were frequently involved in hit & runs.

Adam & Caroline had 2 girls:
Margaret [Randoll] Swyers
Hilda Emila [Randoll] Marzoch--a super nice person
