(Hardesty's History) pg 29: William Smith was born in Sussex Co, New jersey, march 22, 1798, emigrated to Fayette County Pennsylvania, with his parents, Stephen and Mary Smith, who were natives of new Jersey, in 1809 and they came to Meigs Co in 1823.

August 29, 1833, William Smith married Rachel Anderson, born in Monongalia county, Virginia, August 15, 1806. Her (Rachel's) parents were Daniel and Sarah Anderson, and with them she came to Athens county in May, 1814. Mr. and Mrs. William Smith settled on their homestead in Bedford township, in the spring of 1835.

They had seven children: Sarah J. born 7 July 1834, died 22 May 1858; james, 13 Oct 1836, lives in this township; Eliza (Curtis), born in 1839, lives in Racine, this county; Harriet L. (Radford), born in 1842, lives in Chester township, this county; Lucetta, whose birth is given above, who was a successful teacher for many years, and then gave her time and attention to administering to the wants of her parents in their declining years; William, born in November 1847, carries on the homestead farm; Ellen P., born September 1850, died at the age of four years; William Smith served several years as township trustee, and also as justice of the peace twenty-one years. He died 19 Mar 1880. The family receive their mail at Hemlock Grove, Meigs Co, Ohio.
