Meigs Co Democrat- October 6, 1891
Josiah Smith, who departed this life on 10-16-1891, was born in Sussex C to Meigs County, New Jersey, 12-21-1800. He came with his parents to Uniontown, Pa., in 1808 and from there to Meigs County, Ohio, in 1823. He was rendered a cripple for life, when but 19 years of age, by cutting his knee with a sickle. while reaping wheat, and for seven years had to remain indoors, four years of this time being bedfast. While in this condition, he improved his time by studying and although he never attended school more than 2 months of his life, he received sufficient education by self study to obtain a teacher's certificate and taught school for several years, in which capacity, he was one of Meigs County's foremost teachers.
He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1841, and with the exception of one term, served until 1874. On January 18, 1845, in Meigs County, he was married to Miss Priscilla Hill, and by her had ten children eight boys and two girls, of which seven boys, together with their mother, survive him.
In intelligence, Mr. Smith was by far above the average, and his talent for mathematics was simply remarkable and his excellence in memory enabled him to become a well informed man of great nerve and practically knew no such things as fear.
He was benevolent and charitable to those in need of assistance and many are the families who will hold him in great remembrance for his kindness and help in sickness.
The funeral took place at his late residence, Sunday, October 18, 1891, at 2;00 P.M. Rev. Wayne Harkins, officiating, after which the kind old man was laid to rest in the cemetery, nearby, followed by a large number of relatives and friends.
