Roy was the son of John A Knight and Charlotte "Lottie" McDorman. He was the third of four children born to this union. The family may be located on the 1900 US Federal Census in JP1, Coke County, Texas. However, they moved sometime prior to 1910 because they are on the census records in Avoca, Pottawatomie, Oklahoma, USA. Children on the 1910 census were: Addie M (18), Ethel M (16), Ray (14) and Ellen {Helen] T (3).

Roy enlisted in the US Army June 2, 1917. He served in Headquarter Company, 143 Infantry, 36 Division. He was honorably discharged June 14, 1919.

Married Doris Elizabeth Frances Cameron (1898-1995). They had two children: Harriett and John B Knight. In 1930 the family was living in Robert Lee, Coke County, Texas.
