Elvin Harris Garner, 87, of Montgomery, LA died on May 2, 2011 at Rapides Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Derinda Addington Garner and three children, John C. Smith and wife Sylvia of Jarreau, LA; Faye Smith Brannon and husband Jim, and Rosemary Garner Stedman and husband Bob, both of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Other survivors include six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Bo and Lessie Rodgers Garner, brother Bob Garner, sister Edna Garner Yates, and grandson Wade Smith.
He retired from Union Pacific Railroad in Houston, Texas with 43 years of service and returned to Montgomery where he served as mayor of Montgomery for six years. Mr. Garner was a member of First Baptist Church of Montgomery. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of VFW Post 11351 in Montgomery and spent many years volunteering at the V.A. Hospital in Alexandria. He was also a long-time member of Montgomery Masonic Lodge No. 168 and a 32nd degree charter member of the Scottish Rites Masons of Monroe.
Honorary Pallbearers include grandsons: Bud Smith, Casey Brannon, Daniel Roberson, Carrol Marks, and Austin Griffith.
Memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children in Shreveport, LA
Masonic graveside services will be held at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Wheeling at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, under the direction of Kramer of Colfax.
