Bio. courtesy Jean Ohai 28 May 2014:
Mabel or Mehitable Bristol was born 11 Nov 1747 in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut, the only daughter of Benjamin Bristol and Thankful Trowbridge. Her family is documented as the Fort Edwards Bristols in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 45, p. 235.

Mabel married Jonathan Royce, 15 Nov 1762, in Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, where Jonathan had been born, 15 July 1739, the son of John Royce and Dorcas Roots.

Five of their children were born in Woodbury:
Mary Royce/Rice, 25 Feb 1764, md. Seeley Bennett
Abigail Royce/Rice, 21 Mar 1766, md. Purchase Roberts
Amos Royce/Rice, 12 Sep 1768, md. Abigail Andrews
Mabel Royce/Rice, 8 July 1771, md. 1) Jehudah Ashmun, 2) Zebulon Stoddard
Truman Royce/Rice, 10 Apr 1774, md. 1) Unknown, 2) Lois Houghton

After the family removed to Lanesborough, Berkshire, Massachusetts, two more children were born:
Daniel Brister (Bristol) Royce/Rice, chr. 4 Aug 1776, md. Phoebe Barrett
Charlotte Royce/Rice, 5 Feb 1778, md. Thomas "A" Thompson

Jonathan Royce is listed as among Lanesborough's Revolutionary soldiers. Charles J. Balmer, History of the Town of Lanesborough, Massachusetts, 1741-1905, 125.

By 1790 the family had moved to Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont. Jonathan and Mabel Royce may have chosen Clarendon and Ira because of the proximity to Rutland where Jonathan's maternal uncle, Benajah Roots, was the settled Congregational minister. The change in the spelling of the surname also seems to have occurred during their stay in Vermont, perhaps influenced by the many Rice families in the area.

By about 1800, Jonathan and Mabel appear to have moved on to Elizabethtown, Essex, New York. Jonathan's date and place of death are unknown.
