Lieutenant Commander Buell had been living in Kankakee, IL when he entered the service and was a member of Attack Squadron 35, Carrier Air Wing 8, aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS AMERICA (CVA-66).

On September 17, 1972, he was the co-pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a combat mission near Hai Duong, North Vietnam when the aircraft was 8 miles west of th city it crashed. His remains were never recovered.

His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
