Catherine Annabelle McDowell Henry is the first child of David M. McDowell (1792- 1876) and Mary Stewart (1789-1857), both born in Pennsylvania. Catherine was born in Pittsburgh, PA when the family was on its way to Wellsburg, Brooke County, VA/WV. Catherine married William Hugh Henry 4 Aug 1836 in Wellsburg.

David M., Catherine's father, obtained a land grant in 1838 for 400 Acres on Lynn Camp. The farm he established remains in the McDowell Family on Pleasant Ridge, Marshall County, WV.

Sometime around 1850, John Stewart McDowell (1818-1908), brother of Catherine, removed to Missouri. Abt 1860 Leander Thayer Henry, son of Catherine and William, traveled to Missouri. After a year or two, Leander returned to WV, and shortly thereafter, Leander, his parents and siblings removed to the area of St. Louis, Missouri and eventually to Eolia, Pike County, Missouri. All of the children of Catherine and William were born in West Virginia. Per family history two children of Catherine and William were lost on the trail to Missouri; why or where is unknown.

Ethelde HENRY Papers, Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia - "William Hugh HENRY was born ca 1805 in Brooke Co., Virginia. He married in 1836, Catherine Ann McDOWELL who moved to Wellsburg, Brooke Co., Va (WV), going there in the forest and constructing a rude log hut in which they lived for several years; David, Tobias, John, Leander, Mary, Jane, Edgar, McDowell, Marcellus, and Emily. All of these children lived to the age of maturity, except David and Edgar, who were "lost" in the trek to Missouri sometime between the years of 1863-1865." ----"Around 1867, Catherine Ann McDOWELL and William Hugh HENRY came to St Charles, Mo from Marshall Co. Va where they had lived for a number of years after their marriage in 1836."

Catherine had four siblings - Ruth Eliza (1816-1840), John Stewart (1818-1908), Hezekiah (1821-1918) and Mary A. (1825-1862). Catherine also had three half-sisters after David, her father, married a second time to Nancy Cain Calvert (1835-1927). The half-sisters were Virginia (1866-1940), Sarah Mariah (1868-1891), and Alquippa (1870-1889).

In his 1868 will David wrote "2. I give and devise to my daughter Catherine Ann HENRY, the wife of William H. HENRY, two hundred dollars in money to be paid to said Catherine Ann by my Executors at my death."

Catherine and her family removed to Missouri around 1867. At the time of their departure family stories indicate that David provided some of the necessary funds for the trek.
In a Codicil to his will written in June 1876 David notes "... In item second of my will I devise to my daughter Catherine A. HENRY, then the wife of William H. HENRY, the sum of two hundred dollars in money to be paid by my Executrix to the said Catherine Ann HENRY at my death. Said Devise is changed as follows instead of the foregoing. I direct that my Executors give up to Catherine Anne HENRY a note of W. H. HENRY for one hundred dollars and interest and this shall be in lieu of the two hundred dollars in money devised to the said Catherine Anne as aforesaid." David essentially forgave the debt incurred by William Henry and Catherine as a result of their trek west.

Catherine's children wrote regularly to relatives in West Virginia and vice versa; particularly their Uncle Hezekiah McDowell and his family. They remained in regular contact early into the 20th century, however, subsequent generations lost contact.
