Tessa ("Tessie") Clyde Freeman was the second child of Mariman Crittendon Thomas Freeman and Flora Belle (Berry) Freeman. Her father and grandfather, Caleb Lemuel Freeman, farmed in the Prewitt's Knob area near Cave City, Kentucky. Her mother was a school teacher. Tessie was born on February 26, 1889, and died nearly five months later on July 17, 1889. Tessie is buried in the Young Cemetery near Glasgow, Kentucky. Tessie's grave is on the western end of the cemetery. Tessie's grandmother, Keziah Elizabeth (Young) Berry, is buried in the same cemetery.

Descendants of M.C. and Flora Freeman know that Tessie's middle initial stands for "Clyde." Although speculative at this writing, M.C. Freeman might have had a first cousin living in Arkansas by the name of Augustus L. Freeman, each sharing Thomas Freeman, father of Caleb Freeman, as a common ancestor. Eight years before Tessie's birth, Augustus and his wife had a son named Clyde E. Freeman. Augustus died, however, in 1888, so Tessie could have been given the middle name "Clyde" for other reasons.
