George was the youngest of four sons born to George F. & Anna Clara (Skarvan) Stangel. Perhaps it was his birth order or the naturally "scrappy" disposition while growing up; but before long he was responding to the nickname of "Butch."

After graduating high school, "Butch" enlisted in the US Navy, serving with the Construction Battalions {"SeaBees"} in the Pacific Theater of war during WW-II.

"BIO": adapted (w/edits) from his obit, published in the Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter: "George W. "Butch" Stangel, age 84, of Two Rivers, died peacefully Saturday afternoon, March 28, 2009, at Shady Lane Nursing Home, Manitowoc.

"George attended Saint Luke's grade school in Two Rivers and graduated from Washington High School with the class of 1943.

"He excelled in football and track, where he won the state championship in the 200- and 440-yard dashes. George was especially proud of his participation on the 1941 Two Rivers High School basketball team that defeated Shawano High School for the Wisconsin State Basketball Championship.

"As a Navy SeaBee, he served in various locations in the Pacific theater, including the Philippines, Okinawa and occupied Japan. On 29 December 1945, George married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Mae Hurst, at Saint Peter's Chapel on Mare Island Naval Base in Vallejo, California.

"George was part owner and operator in the family's Stangel Super Valu grocery stores in Two Rivers and Manitowoc until his retirement. He was a dedicated member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Two Rivers.

"George enjoyed many sports, including the Green Bay Packers, but nothing gave him more pleasure than talking sports with his nine grandsons, some of whom enjoyed playing on state high school championship teams just as he had. He served on the Two Rivers Library Board, the YMCA Board of Directors, was elected a Manitowoc County Supervisor, and served as a member and president of the Manitowoc Rotary Club and the February Club. George was a former commander and member of the VFW and its Honor Guard in Two Rivers. He also was a founding member of the Thanksgiving Day Classic golf organization, which he founded in 1950 and is now being carried on by his children and grandsons.
