Gary was born August 3, 1917 in Two Rivers, son of the late George and Anna (Skarvan) Stangel. He grew up and attended schools in Two Rivers. On October 7, 1941 Gary was married to the former Althea Aumann at St. Luke Catholic Church in Two Rivers. Gary was the former owner of Stangel's Super Value Grocery Stores in Two Rivers, Manitowoc, Sturgeon Bay and Kewaunee. After his retirement Gary worked part time for Witt Ford in Sturgeon Bay. He is a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Parish in Sturgeon Bay and a former member of the Elk's Club and Knights of Columbus both of Two Rivers. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling.
Survivors include his wife: Althea Stangel, Sturgeon Bay; his six children and their spouses: Donald (Sharon) Stangel, Sheboygan; Claude (Sandra) Stangel, Kewaunee; Barry (Sheri) Stangel, Milwaukee; Luanne (Paul) Kozlowski, Sturgeon Bay; Alan (Sue) Stangel, Alaska Lake; Steven (Suzan) Stangel, Riley's Bay; twelve grandchildren: Gina (Luke) Kelly; Jodi (Dan) Petrie; Jon (Nichole) Stangel; Jeremy (Jennie) Stangel; Jacob Stangel; Jeff (Michelle) Stangel; Kristen (Lou) Richard; Jim Schmidt; John (Adrienne) Schmidt; Kevin (Katie) Kozlowski; Michael Kozlowski; Travis Stangel and his fiancé; April Buhr; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law: Evelyn Stangel, Two Rivers, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents: George and Anna Stangel; one infant daughter: Lou Ann Stangel; three brothers and two sisters-in-law: Daniel Stangel; Leonard (Ethel) Stangel; George (Bette) Stangel Jr.
Private family funeral services will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay with burial of his cremated remains at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc.
