Virgil Halverson was born to the union of Bennie (BA) Halverson and Rena (Hanson) Halverson on June 22, 1919 on a farm near Linn Grove. His family moved from Linn Grove to Sioux Rapids in 1931. Virgil was baptized into the Christian faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove. He was later confirmed in First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. He attended grade school at Highview Consolidated School before graduating from Sioux Rapids High School in 1936. After high school he took up his lifelong occupation of farming.

In March 1943 Virgil was united in marriage to Irene Johnson. To this union three children were born: Sandra Halverson, Judy (Halverson) Moss, and Joan (Halverson) Horton. On Aug. 19, 1972 Virgil married Alice Miller. Alice passed away in November 1979.

Farming was what Virgil loved to do, and did it with great pride. He farmed until his retirement in 1987, and then farming became his favorite hobby. He also enjoyed woodworking, especially making clocks. His kitchen was a coffeehouse to anyone who wanted to join him in a cup of
coffee and conversation.

Virgil was a lifelong resident of Buena Vista County. He entered Sioux Care Center in 1988. It was there that he passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice; and two brothers, Donald and Emmett Halverson.
