Mrs. Hazel Ester McCullough Battles, 90, retired LPN and doctor’s assistant and resident of Maple Court, died Friday, October 17, 2003, at Life Care Center in Columbia, Tennessee.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Oneonta, Alabama, with Rev. Dan Sims and Rev. Bert Goodwin officiating. The family will visit with friends following the service at Lester Memorial United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Oneonta, Alabama. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The Blount County, Alabama native was the daughter of the late Cyrus E. McCullough and Della Battles McCullough. Her husband of sixty-two years, Clifford Travis Battles, preceded her in death on October 16, 1998. Mrs. Battles was a graduate of Blount County High School in Oneonta, Alabama and had made her home in Columbia since 1996. She was a member of Lester Memorial United Methodist Church in Oneonta.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Jerry L. (Charlotte) Battles of Columbia; one brother, Hoyt McCullough of Blountsville, Alabama; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Battles (Colin) Ward of Franklin; Matthew (Kim) Battles of Birmingham, Alabama; and four great grandchildren, Harden Matthew Battles and Russell Paul Battles, both of Birmingham; Emily McCullough Ward and Nolan Colin Ward, both of Franklin.
