Civil War Veteran. Enlisted on August 6, 1862, age 41, and mustered on August 13, 1862, into Company G, 9th Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry (Union). Enlistment Rank: Private; appointed Corporal.


The regiment left New Hampshire for Washington, D.C., August 25, 1862. At Arlington Heights, Va., until September 6. March to Monocacy River to join the army September 6–13.


Battles, Skirmishes, and Engagements: Battle of South Mountain (September 14, 1862); Battle of Antietam (September 16–17, 1862).


Wounded in Action on September 17, 1862, at Antietam, Maryland. Discharged for disability on October 30, 1862, at Newark, New Jersey.


Filed for Invalid Pension on March 19, 1863 (Application No. 36,286 and Certificate No. 159,441).

He was admitted to the church (Congregational) in 1841. He married Hannah P. Weston in Keene on 16 November 1843. Varanes was active in town affairs, becoming the Tax Collector, Justice of the Peace, clerk of the Congregational Church, a storekeeper and a tailor.
