Gladys Harris was born to Charles and Alice Harris in Manassas, Virginia. She was a great and gracious woman of immeasurable strength and courage. She was the loving wife of fifty-five years to the late Richard E. Strayhorn. Gladys had a son, Frederick Calvin Douglas, Jr., whom she spent loving times with until his death on October 19, 2011. She received her early and former education in the Manassas Public School System. She moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania, where she met Richard Strayhorn during World War II. She devoted her life to her family. Her social life with Richard was playing tennis, swimming, hunting and deep-sea fishing. They enjoyed playing bridge and dancing in ballrooms. The two were particularly known for their Waltzing flare. She spent time vacationing with her mother, Alice, in Washington, D.C. At an early age, Gladys accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized in 1957 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her sister, Emma Bush; three daughters, Gladys R. Minor, Linda Susberry and Eleanor Strayhorn; five grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
