Lois Jean Accola was born March 22, 1934, on her father's homestead east of Briggsdale, CO. to Arthur Martin and Lillian Grace Accola. She was the sixth and youngest child in a loving, close-knit family. She became an aunt at the age of 7. In 1951, she graduated at the top of her class at Briggsdale High School, went to Denver and found a job. She was just 17. In 1952, she married and had two daughters before divorcing. Back in Denver, on December 5, 1959 she married Eurelio Primo (Earl) Scopel, a newly commissioned 2nd Lt. in the Air Force. He adopted her daughters. They spent the next 12 years in the Air Force, stationed in Rapid City, SD, Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico, Minot, ND and Riverside AFB, CA. Retired with 20 years service, they came to Evans CO where they have made their home ever since. Their son joined them in 1975 upon completing high school. All 3 children have remained in the Greeley area. A homemaker and mother, Jean enjoyed reading and writing. The family historian, in 1977 she authored a book of family history, Now Whatta You Think O' That. She was an 11th generation American, and proud of it. In 1972, her mother introduced her and Earl to quiltmaking, which was to become their passion. Together and separately, they have produced 130 quilts, many of original design, plus assorted smaller pieces. In 1995, following breast cancer, Jean founded Pieceable Friends Quilt Guild, which now has over 100 members. Jean went to her first dance at the tender age of 10 days, and the senior dances would become their favorite exercise for 32 years. Jean loved to jitterbug to In the Mood. She also loved to travel, and was pleased to have made friends all over the world. She was a 19-year member of Grace Church.Jean was born with a keen mind, an innate honesty, and at times, a sharp tongue. Over the years she developed a mischievous nature, a unique sense of humor, a happy soul, and an ability to love and accept everyone. Her faith grew solid but comfortable, and filled her with joy and peace even to death. These are the qualities that will be missed by her many friends and loved ones. She died of lung cancer on September 12, 2008. She is survived by her husband Earl, three children Karen Scopel, Midge Tucker, Tony Scopel and his wife Maureen, four grandboys, Jayson Scopel and his wife Kimber of Utah, Nick Scopel of the AF, Mike Scopel and Ryan Scopel of Greeley. Other survivors include 10 granddogs, Compassion children Felekech Debela of Ethiopia and Alvaro Gutierrez of Nicaragua, adopted granddaughter Megan Stoneman, three sisters, Elsie Baldon, Grace Austin, Doris Poush, a brother Don Accola and four generations of nephews and nieces.
