Civil War Union Surgeon. A descendant of Declaration of Independence Signer Francis Hopkinson, he was Chief Surgeon of Philadelphia's massive Mower Hospital. With 3,100 beds, it was the third largest Union Army Military hospital during the Civil War, being topped by only Satterlee Hospital(3,519 beds), also in Philadelphia, and the United States Army General Hospital at Fortress Monroe, Virginia (3,497 beds). Filling a full 27 acres(stretching from County Line [now Stenton Avenue] to Germantown Avenue, and from Springfield Avenue to Abington Avenue), it opened up in January 1863, it received and treated casualties from every major battle and action in the Virginia Theatre. Over 20,000 sick and wounded passed through the hospital, with less then 300 dying while there. Doctor Hopkinson died of yellow fever shortly after the conclusion of the war. Mower Hospital was torn down soon after, it's size no longer needed.
