James Solomon McKinley, son of John A. McKinley and Nancy L. Pierce, was born in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, the oldest of eight children. His father died when he was nineteen, his mother when he was twenty four.
James married first Mary Adams on 30 Jun 1874 in Morgan Co., Missouri.
They had three children;
Elijah Green McKinley b. 1875

William Arthur McKinley b. 1879
Mary died in 1897, and James married secondly Susanna Henrietta Busch on 15 Apr 1899 in Versailles, Morgan, Missouri.
They had six children; Leona Teresa, Lena Levona, Myrtle Margarette, Edith Nova, Ralph and Wray J. McKinley.
Ralph died as an infant and Myrtle died from an infection following childbirth at 21.
