Laurens Feb 9 – James M Smith, 82, well known Laurens County resident, died early today at his home near Waterloo, after a brief illness, though he had been in declining health for some time. He had recently returned from a visit to a daughter in Florence.

Mr Smith was a native of Dunklin Township, Greenville County, a son of the late Robert and Sarah McCullough Smith. Most of his adult life, however, had been spent in Waterloo Township, as a successful farmer and civic leader. Mrs Smith died in 1931.

Surviving sons and daughters are: J P, R Guy, David C, Fleming and John C Smith of Waterloo. Joe F Smith, former mayor of Laurens and James M Smith Jr of Gaffney, Mrs A C Fuller and Mrs Claude McMahon of Laurens, Mrs R P Peterson of Florence.

Mr Smith had been an active member of the Waterloo Methodist Church. Burial Waterloo Cemetery.

Mary Amanda Smith, daughter of Joel Franklin Smith and Letitia Hill Jones Smith (Dec 16, 185 6; died May 1931) married her cousin, James Milton Smith, son of Robert Smith. Robert Smith was a son of John Skinner Smith.
