Married to Jacob (Jake) Gillespie (1885-1957) in Eugene on 27 Oct 1912. She was an elementary school principal and teacher at a time when it was rare for a wife to work outside the home. A farm wife and mother of two daughters and one son, she was a wonderful old-fashioned cook. She was proud that all three of her children were successful, with one being a registered nurse and two business owners. (Two of her children and their spouses later went into business together.) As an educator, Myrtle would be delighted that all 7 of her grandchildren graduated from college, with most earning post-graduate degrees.

Famous for her mouth-watering farm-style cooking, such as Sunday chicken dinners with mashed potatoes and gravy and all the trimmings. Her specialties were home-made pies. She passed her pie-making skills down to some of her grandchildren, who remember standing on a stool at her side in her farm kitchen and being shown how to make pie crust. She gave them their own miniature pie tins and they would make their own mini-pies.
