She emigrated to the United States in the 1920s, and in 1935, she returned back to Finland, to bring her nephew, my grandfather, Edwin, back home to live with his mother, Hilja's sister, Fiina "Armida" and stepfather, John Solomon. Hilja brought my grandfather, Edwin, back to the United States in October 1935. Edwin ran away right before leaving Finland, Hilja had to find Edwin because he did not want to leave Finland. Edwin tried to run away again right before he and Hilja boarded the ship to America. Hilja visited Finland a few times, in 1944 and 1952.
