He is listed in the 1910 census as single along with B. Gilbert [this would be Lillie Belle Gilbert] and two children Mammie C. [Mamie Carrie] and Elva Gilbert. Lillie's death cert a few years later showed her as Lillie Bell Gilbert and single. Thus, it appears that Lillie Belle may have had a couple of children before her relationship with Thomas Staples and that they never married. Thomas appears to have adopted the girls after their mother's death, as both Mamie and Elva [married William Rufus Turner (110529706) in 1929] were married with the surname Staples with Thomas being indicated as their father and Lillie as their mother. Thomas is listed as Mamie's father on her death cert.
