Lewis Walter was born on 23 Sep 1859 in Cumberland, Allegheny, Maryland and baptised 5 days later in St. Luke's Lutheran Church. His parents were Albert and Christina Becker Walter, who were both immigrants from Germany. Lewis' father, Albert, died sometime during 1859, as Christina married John Pfeiffer 2 Jan 1860 in St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Although raised by John, Lewis retained the Walter surname.

By 1863 Lewis and his Pfeiffer family lived in the area of Preston Tannery in Preston County, West Virginia. They remained in Preston County until Apr 1879 as on 30 April 1879 John and Christina purchased ¼ acre lot (#36) at the corner of Reese Street and South 6th Street, in the Brandt Addition of Oakland, Maryland from Mr. and Mrs. John O. Michaels. Lewis and 2 subsequent generations lived in this home until its destruction by fire in 1968.

He worked for the B&O Railroad as a laborer and trackman. On 15 Apr 1888 Lewis married Ella Jamison Little at the home of her parents, David and Elizabeth Martin Little. Lewis and Ella had seven (7) known children: Albert Lewis (1889-1967), David William (1890-1968), Julius Wilber (1892-1956), Elizabeth Little Turney (1894-1963), Mary Ellen (1896 died at 1 week old), John Phillip (1901-1977), and Genevieve Lillian (1905-1918).

Lewis suffered from chronic "basoganglia" heart disease with Endocarditis as the contributory factor and died from this on 17 Nov 1921 at the age of 62 in Oakland.

The following obituary was taken from The Republican, Nov. 24, 1921.

“LEWIS WALTER
After an illness of more than ten years, Mr. Lewis Walter died very suddenly at his home in Oakland on Thursday, November 17th, at five minutes to one o'clock, from heart disease with which he had been a great sufferer.  The deceased was born September 24th, 1859, at Cumberland, Md., and was 62 years old at the time of his death.  He was united in marriage on April 15, 1888, to Miss Ella Little at Oakland.  To this marriage were born seven children--four sons and three daughters==two of whom preceded him in death.  The following named children are still at home: Albert, David, Julius, Elizabeth and Philip.  Three grandchildren also survive.  He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. George Little, of Oakland and by three brothers, Daniel Pfeiffer, of Chicage; Charles Pfeiffer, of Dayton, O., and George Pfeiffer, of Cumberland, all of whom were present at the funeral services which were held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from St. Mark's Lutheran church of which the deceased had been a consistent and loyal member from early childhood and was always present at the services until he was taken ill.  The services at the church were conducted by Rev. David M. Funk, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Grubbs, pastor of the Presbyterian church.  The pall bearers were D. L. Conneway, George D. White, Robert Gemmell, Arthur Lawton, Arthur Townshend, E. G. Naylor.  The Knights of Phythias Lodge, of which Mr. Walter was a member for many years attended the service and conducted the ceremonies incident to the interment at the cemetery.  Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. James Kelley of Benwood; Mr. and Mrs. Thos. J. C. Little and Mr. John Compton, of Grant Town; Mr. W. J. Graves of Rowlesburg; Mr. Thomas Little, Sr., of Salisbury, Pa; Mr. Grover Compton, of Terra Alta.”

Note on spelling of surnames: Originally the family surname was spelled Walther but occasionally dropped the "h" and sometimes added an "s" to the end. The last known use of Walther is on the official Death Certificate for Lewis' wife, Ella (5 Feb 1927). Likewise, Lewis's mother's surname of Becker was often written as Baker, but the official German records of her family have the original as Becker.
