Harold Dean Alsop (Allsop)
1916 ~ 2012
Harold Dean Alsop, passed on at 96 in Draper, Utah on July 22, 2012.
He was born in Lehi, Utah on January 30, 1916 to Henry Ray Allsop and Lavina Ethel Thayne. He attended Murray High School where he started his career in music. He played trumpet in the school band. He paid his way through college by playing in dance bands. He graduated from BYU June 8, 1938, with an A. B. degree in Fine Arts.
During nearly 40 years of teaching band classes, he taught thousands of students at South Sevier, Murray, Granite and Olympus High Schools, and Evergreen Junior High. Additionally, he taught individual music lessons to countless others. As an award-winning musician, he played professionally in the Utah Symphony, in dance bands, in stage bands for vaudeville shows at the Orpheum theater, and in band concerts at Liberty Park. In military service, he was in the 145th Field Artillery Band. He was an accomplished, dedicated and hard-working professional and provider for his family.
He married Ida Louise Cooper in the Salt Lake Temple on December 23, 1937. As an accomplished pianist, she accompanied his many trumpet performances before and during their marriage. Together, they built a home and raised a son in Murray. He served in a bishopric, quorum leadership and music callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After 57 years of marriage, Louise died on May 7, 1994. His sorrow and loneliness were swept away when he found Glenna Simmons Christensen, and married her on July 20, 1995. They enjoyed traveling on cruises, and associations with their families and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Glenna; son, Richard (Janet) Alsop; grandchildren, Laura (Roland) Smith, Christopher (Heidi) Alsop, Heather (Cory) Hansen, Sandra (Michael) Steele, Alasun (Hyriam) Fleming; 17 great grandchildren; and by brothers Wayne and LaMar.
