John Backus, 47, of 2615 Sheridan Pl., Manitowoc, died at his home Wednesday
morning following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Urbanek and Schlei
Funeral Home and at 9 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev.
Clement Kerr will officiate with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Backus was born in 1904 in Manitowoc Rapids, and in 1936 married Mary Hogan
of Manitowoc, and they resided in the city. Mr. Backus was a 25 year man at the
Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Company where he was a die setter.
Survivors are the wife; two sons, Donald, a student at the Salvatorian Seminary
in St. Nazianz, and James at home; daughter, Judith at home; three brothers,
Joseph of Kelley Lake, Henry of St. Louis, Mo., and Charles of Rt. 5, Manitowoc;
two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Roberts and Mrs. Richard Bauer of Rt. 1, Manitowoc.
Another sister, Mrs. Mike Heidorf of Grand Rapids, Mich., died a year ago.
Friends may call at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home from Thursday evening
until time of services. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Mr.
Backus was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Catholic Knights of
Wisconsin.
