Mrs. J. Backhaus, 64, County Pioneer, Dies At Newton Home
Mrs. John Backhaus, aged 64 years, passed away Friday night at the home on Route 1, Manitowoc, after a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9:15 at the home and at 9:30 from the St. Joseph's church, Silver Lake, with interment there.
The maiden name of the deceased was Katherine Espen and she was born in the town of Kossuth in 1866. She was married April 24, 1890 to John Backhaus and they resided on a farm near Silver Lake since.
Besides the husband three daughters, Mrs. Michael Heidorf, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. Oscar Roberts, city, and Amanda, at home, and four sons, Joseph, Silver Lake; Henry, St. Louis; Charles, city and John Jr., at home, survive. One sister, Mrs. Anna Lensmeier, Kellnersville, and fifteen grandchildren also survive.
