She was born on April 19, 1910 in Detroit, MI daughter of the late Willard A. and Elizabeth G. Stevens Warren. Dorothy was raised and educated in Albion and went on to graduate from Geneseo State Teachers College. A first grade teacher she first taught school in Herkimer where she also served as interim Principle of Tuger School. She then taught in Mohawk Central School retiring in 1968 after thirty years of dedicated service.
On July 19, 1945 she married Edward L. Hess in Herkimer. A loving and devoted union of thirty-five years Mr. Hess died on March 10, 1981.
Mrs. Hess had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Christian life. She was a longtime member of the Herkimer Reformed Church where she was Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the Church Consistory, Sarah Circle and sang in the church choir. As she became unable to attend church you could always count watching Hour of Power each Sunday morning. She was a member and Past Matron of Myrtle Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and currently a member of Evening Star Valley Chapter # 82 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed sports and was an avid New York Yankee fan her recreation was playing golf and was a member of Cedar Country Club. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, from the time of her retirement, she and her husband Edward traveled extensively and had many enjoyable memories. To those who knew her they will always remember her sweet smile and gentle spirit she will be greatly missed by her friends and relatives.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Jane Williams of Hemet, CA, a step-grandson Robert Williams, two step-great granddaughters, a cousin Joyce and her husband George Clark of Rushville and her dear friends Ruth and Sullivan Cipriano who loved and cared for her abiding by her wishes so she would not have to enter a nursing home.
Besides her parents and husband Edward a sister Elizabeth Woolheater preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be on Thursday at 11:00 am in the Herkimer Reformed Church. The Reverend James Foster, interim Pastor will officiate. Visiting hours in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, will be on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Member of Evening Star Valley Chapter # 82 OES are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6:30 pm for ritualistic services.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Herkimer Reformed Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
