Esequiel Chávez, age 89, passed away on January 26, 2000 at St. Joseph Hospital in Albuquerque following an illness.
Esequiel was born on October 21, 1910 in Pinos Wells, NM to the home of Juan and Aurelia Sánchez Chávez.
As a young man, Esequiel was a bronc rider, a dry land farmer, rancher, carpenter, and a retired school bus driver.
Esequiel married Flora Chávez on February 10, 1934 in Pinos Wells, they made their home in Durán, NM in 1945.
Esequiel was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will truly be missed. Esequiel was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Durán, the St. Josephs Society in Pinos Wells, the Knights of Columbus and served as Fire Chief of the Durán Volunteer Fire Department for over ten years.
Esequiel was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Flora on February 5, 1999, brothers and sisters, Vina Olguín, Lupita Madril, Antonio Chávez, Eufemio Chávez, Daniel Chávez, Paul Chávez and Ray Chávez.
Survivors include his daughter, Joan García and her husband, Leonard of Rio Rancho, three sons, Dennis Chávez and his wife, Sally of Albuquerque, Lou Chávez and his wife, Etta of Santa Rosa and Ted Chávez and his wife, Mary of Rio Rancho, brothers, George Chávez of Santa Fé, Ignacio Chávez of Española, Abe Chávez of Mesa, AZ, Benny Chávez of Albuquerque and Max Chávez of Barstow, CA and one sister, Concha Sánchez of Belén. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vaughn. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. also at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vaughn with Father Tim Martínez officiating. Burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Durán. Serving as pallbearers will be Dennis Chávez II, Richard Chávez, Edwin Chávez, Elvin Chávez, Gary Chávez, Michael Chávez, Zeke Chávez, Shaun García, Scott García, Leonard García, Denise Guerrero, Elitta Otero, Sylvia Armindarez and Nadine Blyth. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be George Chávez, Ignacio Chávez, Abe Chávez, Benny Chávez, Max Chávez, Sam Hindi, Bobby Chávez, Johnny Madril, Gilbert Chávez, Leandro Abeyta, Lorenzo Chávez, Herculano Chávez, Leandro Chávez and Evan Gutiérrez.
