Gilbert O. Adams, 82 years old and the last surviving Civil War veteran living in Liberal, died at his home on East Maple Street at 9:20 o'clock Tuesday evening July 26, 1932. He had been ill one week, following a stroke of apoplexy. Following the stroke, suffered the night of July 18, he had been more or less unconscious until the end. It was thought a final severe cerebral hemmorhage was suffered only a few hours before the end.
Mr. Adams was born in Jasper county, Illinois, Nov 26, 1849, a son of Timothy Randall Bloomfield Adams, who as well as the deceased were pioneer residents of Liberal. February 13, 1864, when a boy only a little past fifteen years old, Mr. Adams enlisted in Company C, 62nd Illinois infantry, as a drummer boy, and was mustered out at Fort Smith Ark on Feb 13, 1866.
He was the last surviving Civil War veteran living in Liberal. His friend and comrade A. Decker, next to the last surviving veteran preceded him in death three days. There now remain but four Civil War veterans in this vicinity, as far as the news can learn. They are Chas Brown of Hannon; Judge H. S. Snyder, Verdella; Clark Bulard, Mulberry, all up in their eighties, and C. w. Palmer, Iantha, 90 years old. Mr. Adams attended a G. A. R. gathering at Wichita, Kans a few weeks ago.
He is survived by his wife and four children, T imothy K. Adams, Bronaugh; Frank Adams, Trinidad Colo; Owen Adams, Silver City Iowa, and Mrs. Bessie Searles, Liberal, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.; also by several brothers and sisters. A more detailed obituary will be given next week.
Funeral services are being held at the M. E. church this Thursday afternoon at 2:00. The entire services will be by members of the family. The sermon will be by Rev. Lewis Grant Adams, a brother.
Burial will be at the I. O. O. F cemetery, under direction of the Berkey funeral service. I.O.O.F = International Order of Odd Fellows; cemetery is known as the Liberal Cemetery, (Liberal City Cemetary) where his first wife is buried.
