His wife called him Corneal in letters that she wrote home to her brother and family. He went out at dawn and came back to the house after dark, in October he was getting in the corn, with any luck they would get in 600 bushels. It sold for a very low price. He was fatting up (his words) 18 hogs to sell and 11 to keep. Hogs were selling at 4-5 cents per pound. He had bought a cow because the last one he bought was dry. He was very happy to trade his old wagon and a hog for a newer wagon that had spring seats. He was going to fat up his hogs at the place where he grew the corn. Keep some and sell some, they had enough food to last them the winter as of that writing. Corneal was a very hard working man and tried very hard both he and his wife to keep things so that they did not go into debt as per the letter by his wife Barbara. The letter was written from Medora, Warren County Iowa in October 22 but no year given.
In another letter from Barbara home to her family she states that Corneal is teaching at a school one half mile from their home and making $40.00 per month.
I have just read that he served in the U.S. Army in the Civil War but was discharged at the age of 19 with a disability. He enlisted 25 August 1863 with the rank of Private, they mustered out 13 December 1865, He enlisted in company 1 Indiana 51'st infantry Regiment. Indiana.
