Henry Frank Brown was a stone cutter from Kentucky who came to Mason County seeking work in a granite quarry. Finding a boarding house was difficult for the young men who worked there, therefore Katherine Strackbein Durst said that she would give the men board and do their laundry for $12.00 per month. Brown was not particularly fond of Mason County, so he said he'd pay $6.00 for two weeks board. He ended staying for four years. It was there, of course, that he met John and Katherine Durst's daughter, Louisa. Until the granite workers came into the home, the family spoke only German, however he family began to learn English from their boarders. (Unidentified Newpaper Article, Henry H. Willmann Research) Henry Frank was also involved in building the Texas State Capitol. (Donald Crawford Research)
