Rosa Appel, née Rzeznik, of Vienna Austria, born Sept. 22, 1922, in Deblin, Poland, passed away June 25, 2012. Beloved wife of the late Walter; loving mother of Herman (Etty) and the late Jackie; proud grandmother of Morris (Victoria) and Natalie; and dear great-grandmother of Jacob and Jonathan; devoted sister to Sara Hafft (Herbert) and brother, Sam Harris (Dede); treasured aunt to David (Linda), Barry (Donna), and Kenneth (Wendy) Hafft, Julie, née Harris (Jeffry) Kreamer and David Harris; sweet great-aunt to Rebecca, née Hafft (Steve) Hanson, Matthew, Jenna, Brandon, and Zackary Hafft, and Jeremy and Jessica Kreamer. After losing most of her family during WWII, Rosa was a survivor of two concentration camps; Deblin and Czestochowa. A clever and courageous heroine, she sacrificed her own safety and single-handedly protected and saved her two younger siblings, Sara Hafft and Sam Harris, until all three were liberated from the camps in 1945. Wanting a better life for Sara and Sam, Rosa continued to guide and watch over her siblings until they were lovingly adopted by families in the U.S. As a result of her commitment to family, many more generations have been given the opportunity to live, thrive, and carry on her love and remarkable spirit. Donations in Rosa's memory may be made to Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, 9603 Woods Drive, Skokie, IL 60077. For info., call: 847-967-4800 or www.ilholocaustmuseum.org.
