Maria "Barbara" Brugier was born in 1847 to John Philippe Brugier and Elizabetha Wolf in Speyer, Bavaria, Germany. She immigrated in 1848 with her parents and sister to Ebenezer near Buffalo, New York. They came to join the Community of True Inspiration in Ebenezer, New York. Barbara's father left the society temporarily in 1851 and it is assumed Barbara was left in the care of her mother Elizabeth Wolf. In March 1863 when she was just 16 years old she came to the new settlement for the Inspirationists in Amana, Iowa. There she met and married Andreas Schiff in August 1869. They had two sons, Andreas the V and William and were active members in the Amana Society.
Barbara died at home on September 7, 1921, one day after her son Andreas V also died.
