Andreas Schiff was born December 18, 1834 in Meissenheim, Baden, Germany to Andreas Schiff and Maria Huser. His father died in Germany when he was 8 years old. He and his mother immigrated to Ebenezer (Buffalo) New York in 1852. In September 1855 he came to Amana to help prepare in the building of the Amana Society. In Amana he worked in the saw mill. On August 25, 1869 he married Barbara Brugier in Amana. He was naturalized on November 4, 1887.
