US Marshal for Vermont. He graduated from Castleton Normal School (Castleton, Vermont) in 1887 and taught school before attending the Rochester Business University (Rochester, New York), from which he graduated in 1890. While working as a bookkeeper, he studied law with an attorney in Brattleboro, Vermont. He attained admission to the bar in 1896 and received his law degree from Boston University Law School in 1897. Carpenter practiced in North Adams, Massachusetts and Readsboro, Vermont until 1904, when he moved to Detroit for a year. He returned to Vermont in late 1905 and established a law practice in Brattleboro. Active in politics as a Democrat, he was Chairman of the party in Brattleboro and served as Town Agent, Town Attorney, and a Justice of the Peace. From 1914 to 1922, Carpenter was Vermont’s US Marshal. In 1923 he was appointed Judge of Brattleboro’s municipal court, and he served until 1929. Carpenter continued to practice law until his death. He remained active in politics and was a delegate to the 1936 Vermont Democratic convention.
