Simon Hirsch, 91-year old pioneer resident of Java, passed away in the Eureka hospital on Tuesday, February 03. He had been ill only a few weeks. Mr. Hirsch had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Willie Bauer at Eureka, for the past few months.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 09, from the Baptist Church in Herreid, of which the deceased was a member, with the Reverend E S Fenske of Herreid and the Reverend A Krombein of Eureka, officiating. Burial was in the Herreid Cemetery.
Simon Hirsch was born in Friedensthal, South Russia, on December 20, 1856, where he grew to young maanhood. In 1878 he was united in marriage to Barbara Faul and to this union, two children were born. In 1881, his wife passed away and later he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Freimark and this union was blessed with eight children. In 1894, sorrow once more came upon the family when the mother again was taken from the home.
The deceased came to the United States with his family and here was united in marriage to Juliana Mohr. The family made their home on a farm in the Sutley community, north of Java, and five children were born to this union.
Some 20 years ago, Simon and Mrs. Hirsch moved into Java to live a retired life. On August 20, 1947, Mrs. Hirsch passed away after a long illness.
He is survived by five sons, John, Karl and Jacob of Miles City, Montana, Gust, of north of Java, and Ed of Java; six daughters, Magdalena (John) Fischer of Herreid, Friederickaa (Michael) Kallis of Bearmouth, Montana, Elizabeth (Willie) Bauer of Eureka, Ida (Christ L) Lutz and Martha (Gust) Rau, and Emma (Henry) Grenz of Herreid; six stepchildren, Mrs. Eva Kramlich of Colfax, Washington, Mrs. Wilhelmina Hirning of Missoula, Montana, Philip Rieger of Portland, Oregon, Adolph Rieger of Plevna, Montana, Mrs. O J Kundert of Mound City, and Mrs. Juliana Heinle of Missoula, Montana; 73 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
