Obituary - Herb Austin - Patchogue lost one of its greatest boosters last week in the death of Herbert F. Austin. For many years Herb Austin was what could be called a "one-man Patchogue chamber of commerce", and throughout his 50 years of residence here he gave unselfishly of his time and energy to various civic causes. Even after moving to Florida several years ago, he continued his great interest in this community on periodic visits. A highly successful general insurance agent, he was co-founder and the second president of the Patchogue Rotary Club and for a long time was one of the most active workers in the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce. For a short time he managed the Patchogue Hotel. Scores of original ideas for promoting Patchogue originated with him. World War II servicemen well remember two of his ideas, one being the panorama photograph of Patchogue's "Four Corners", and the other a book of photographs of local scenes entitled "Magic Carpet Furlough". A tribute in this week's Rotary bulletin "In Mesh" contains some words that well sum up this enterprising man: "His dynamic personality, creative ability, flair for original ideas, made him a leader in his chosen profession as well as a master promoter, fund raiser, organizer and builder in community affairs. The American Red Cross, Chamber of Commerce, Suffolk Flyers Club in the twenties, Requa Boys Club in the thirties, the Patchogue Hotel Corporation, our service men and war heroes are only a few of the groups that have benefited from his leadership, from his tireless, unselfish devotion of time and energy." With his usual enthusiasm, Herb became interested in photography as a hobby and many of his excellent appeared in former issues of this newspaper. Staff members remember with affection his many visits to our offices to talk over projects, photos and things in general. Herb Austin contributed greatly to Patchogue betterment and civic pride, and he will long be remembered. To the members of his family, we offer sincere sympathy on behalf of a grateful community.
