Robert was the son of Robert and Martha Stuart Inghram. His father born in England and his mother in Maine. When Robert became of age he went west and was in Nez Perces in 1872. He assisted to build Dr. Baker's railroad to Walla Walla, it being the first line running from Wallula to Walla Walla. After two years he went east and in 1876 went to California and in 1877 returned to Lewiston and in the employ of the government. He left an estate of 480 acres.

His siblings were Amos, John; died in the civil war, Frank; lost a limb in the civil war, Charlie, Mary, Joseph and Samuel.

He married Miss Eliza Small, daughter of John and Jane Stevens Small on July 2, 1862. They were the parents of John F., Bernard E., Robert, Alfretta and David Boyd Inghram.
