"Uncle" Pyrrus Nelson, a well known citizen died at his late home in the Gradyville country last Saturday night. He was 77 years old and had been a teacher in this county for more than fifty years. He will be greatly missed from the community where he had been a useful citizen all these years. His wife and several children survive him. The funeral services were conducted by the Masonic Fraternity.

Son of Alexander Bradford Nelson and Sally Porter. Pyrrhus was a schoolteacher and a farmer. Sally Porter was the daughter of Samuel Porter, Jr. and Mary Polly Withers.

Alexander and his family moved to Adair Co about 1830. Sally Nelson died of cholera in 1835. Alexander never remarried. Alexander was a druggist. Alexander died at Pyrrhus's home on Sept 2, 1862.

Pyrus, Kentucky is located two miles northwest of Gradyville and consisted of a post office and a store. Believed to be named after Pyrrhus. Their store was located just across Big Creek from their farm.

In his later years he was engaged in legal work and was appointed lawful attorney on some cases.

Wife: Married one of his students when she was about 14. Mary Albertine Henderson was the daughter of Reuben Berrington Henderson and Emeline Atkinson.

Mary Eugenia Nelson 1854 – 1937, married Samuel T. Sullins.

Maude Elizabeth Bradford Nelson 1863 – 1935 married Stephen Alfred Harper. Weed Cem in Adair Co.

Elnora Sweet Nelson 1865 – 1909, married her second cousin James A. Nelson the son of James O. Nelson and Emily Moore. Died in Illinois.

Evelena Nelson 1867 – 1954, married Charles William Rodgers and died at LaGrange, Ky.

Lula May (Cora) Nelson 1871 – 1969, married William B. Compton, died in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Henry C. Nelson 1872 – 1946, married Elnora Allen Keltner.

Elsie Nelson 1880 – 1954, never married. She was employed at the Kentucky Children's HOme in Lyndon and was the typesetter for the local newspaper in Green Co. After she retired she moved to Missouri to be near her sister Lula Mae Sullins.
