As the story goes...
Alice Leanor Leaver was born in England. She married there to a British soldier, Daniel Dilworth, then moved to Jullunder, India. Their first child, Helen (Nellie) Elizabeth Dilworth, was born there. The second child born was Daniel James, followed by Margaret Louise. Their father died in India from being sunstroked and the family returned to England. Margaret Louise died soon after. Later, Alice remarried to James Brailey and Maryanne (Mamie) was born to them. They then came by boat to the United States and settled in Storm Lake, Iowa. Then, after having had two more children, Alice Leaver Dilworth Brailey died. As the story goes, Mr. Brailey was an alcoholic and mean to the children, so they were taken away from him and sent to live in foster homes. Maryanne (Mamie) went to live with the Gales family, Edna went to live with the Allens at Alta, Iowa, and baby John went to the Bennets by Trusdale, Iowa. Dan Dilworth was sent to live with the Termillins and Helen went to the Abbotts by Alta. Three years later, Nellie was sent to the Comans in Storm Lake. My parents, Helen (Nellie) Dilworth and William Goff, were married January 4, 1899. Mamie lived with my parents for five years from 1901 to 1906.
