Joseph H. Allen, for many years a valued resident of this community, died at his home in Alta on Monday evening after an illness of several months. He was at Iowa City for treatment in March, and came home somewhat benefitted, but the improvement proved but temporary and for several weeks he had been sinking.

Mr. Allen was born in Dubuque county, Iowa on March 4, 1859, his father being Joseph Allen, a native of England. His mother was Maria Blagg, also of English birth and both were pioneers in the settlement of English people in the Dyersville community. He was brought up by an uncle, and when a young man, he came to Nebraska and then to this community. He worked on a farm, saved his money and in due time became an extensive land owner.

He took an active interest in community affairs and was one of the organizers of the local farmers elevator and creamery. For years he was on the board of directors of both institutions. He was an active member of the Methodist church for many years.

Mr. Allen was married to Miss Effie Wagstaff of St. Lawrence county, New York, who had come out here to teach school. Three children were born to them, all of whom died while yet children. They were Gladys Gale Allen, Claud Kingston Allen, and Leland L. Allen. Edna James came to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Allen and took their name and has made her home with them for years.

The funeral will be held from the home of the deceased on Thursday. Mr. Allen was on the official board of the M.E. church for years. Rev. W. Witter will be in charge of the services in the absence of Revg. G.A. Osborne, who is on vacation.
