Edward J. Happ, 80, died Aug. 19, 2004, at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute.

He was born in Richmond Hill, N.Y., and was a resident of Port St. Lucie for 23 years, coming from Smithtown, N.Y.

He served in the Army during World War II, where he received the medal for good conduct.

Prior to retirement, he was a design engineer with Grumman Aerospace, Corp. in Bethpage, N.Y., Savannah, Ga., and Stuart, Fl.

Mr. Happ was one of the designers of the Apollo Lunar Module, and in recognition of this, his name was engraved on a plaque on the decent stage of the module that now stands on the moon's surface.

He also participated in the design of naval carrier aircraft from the F-9F to the F-14.

He was a member of Morningside Friends Church, Port St. Lucie.

He enjoyed golfing and was a volunteer with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and many St. Lucie County schools, where he received several volunteer of the year awards.
