Jacob first married Rebecca Scott, daughter of Crawford Scott II and Mary Barnes in December 1821 in Pennsylvania. In 1831, Jacob and Rebecca moved their family to Wayne County, Ohio. Later they moved to Tuscarawas County in 1839. They had ten children in all. Rebecca died in 1841 shortly after delivering their tenth child.
In 1843 Jacob married Catherine (Bash) Fry, a widow with four children. Jacob and Catherine then had six children of their own. In 1854, Jacob moved the family to Daviess County, Indiana where he had purchased and farmed 160 acres of land in Madison Township. Jacob was a co-founder of the Pleasant Hill United Brethren Church, and is buried in its cemetery.
