Actress. She moved from England to New York with her family when she was very young, settling in Richmond, Virginia. She performed with her sisters in a variety of plays there. During the Civil War she was extremely popular, providing inspiration to Confederate Soldiers. Sallie played to packed houses. Her rendition of "Southern Soldier Boy" brought nightly ovations of wild cheering. She was the Prima Donna of the South. Sallie claimed that her good friend, Clementine DeBarr, showed her letters from John Wilkes Booth long after the Civil War, proving that he was not killed, but escaped to Australia, where he lived out the remainder of his life. She knew Booth personally, describing him as mysterious and flirtatious. At the height of her career, she was known as "The Star of the South." After the war, she performed in New York City, where her popularity continued.
